Time for some truth bombs. Over the past few weeks, I have never felt more confident, yet also so insecure about myself. Bouncing back and forth between “I am a f-ing goddess” and “I’m not good enough, I cannot do this”. Then I came across this text (source unknown) called “Own your stuff”. So let me share.

I am not intimidating, you are intimidated. There is a difference.
I don’t take up too much space; you’re just used to people playing small.
My inner light is not too bright; you are used to dimming your own.
I am not mean nor aggressive, I am honest and assertive and that makes you uncomfortable.
I do not make you uncomfortable. My presence challenges your comfort.
All of this is yours. I will not be less for you to feel better about yourself.

It hit me like a rock and here’s why. Ever since I started my breathwork and tantra journey (and adding some shamanic mentoring to it), I’ve changed. I have become more expressive and outspoken. More “out there” and visible. More direct and opinionated. Fiercely driven in my quest for self-consciousness and self-awareness. I have become more liberated and free in my sexuality, not afraid to use it to my benefit to get what I want. More protective of myself, my time and energy. I have become the most vulnerable yet most powerful version of me so far. And the end is nowhere near.

But this change has also triggered those around me, even people close to me. “Do you really need to post that picture?”, “is that comment necessary?”, “don’t you think this story is a bit too much or too provocative?”. And when people around me say these things, I crawl back into my shell and my self-doubt and shame kick in. Two “old friends” that I can gladly go without in life and so can you ❤️.

DO NOT SETTLE. Do not doubt, do not play small. Own your stuff. Follow your heart’s desire, regardless of what everyone else thinks. Fuck that. No concessions. Do you. Love you. Take care of you. You first. Me first. Not selfish, pure self-love. Take that in, suck it up and let it simmer. You’re welcome 🙌🔥.

Eeuwenlang zijn vrouwen, vrouwenlichamen, onderworpen aan de macht van de patriarch en religieuze schaamte. Als je als vrouw niet voldeed aan de verwachtingen vanuit de heerschappij werd je bespot, verbannen, verwond of zelfs vermoord. Dit heeft de vrouwelijkheid en het vrouw zijn diep beschadigd. Tot op de dag vandaag kunnen vrouwen niet volledig vrouw zijn.

Het is zo makkelijk om naar een andere vrouw te kijken en te oordelen. Je ziet haar, anders dan jij, en maakt haar af, klein, haalt haar neer. Zij is té, too much, te weinig, meer of minder. Levendiger, luider, aanweziger, sexier. Saaier, duffer, muffer. Dikker, dunner. Jonger, ouder. En dan oordeel je. Je veroordeelt haar. En met dat oordeel, veroordeel je jezelf. Wtf ladies?!

Waarom doen we dat? Vergelijken? Oordelen? Waarom voelen we ons inferieur of superieur ten opzichte van andere vrouwen? Stop.
*
Sisterhood, daar gaat het om. De definitie van sisterhood is een sociaal, ethisch en emotioneel pact tussen vrouwen. Gebaseerd op het inzicht dat we samen sterker zijn dan alleen. Die kracht, die zelfbeschikking is alleen mogelijk als we samen komen en elkaar zien als sisters, niet als rivalen. Het is een pact, een relatie gebaseerd op onze waarde als collectief, vastberaden om de wereld te veranderen.

Zie hoe uniek je bent, zie hoe uniek zij is. Eer en aanbid jouw lijf, haar lijf. Koester jouw verlangen en dat van haar. Kijk in de spiegel en zie dat wat je bent: een f*ing goddess. Kijk naar haar en zie wat zij is: een f*ing goddess. Together we rise like an unstoppable force.

Sometimes you have to go through the same thing over and over again in order to learn the lesson, heal from it and let go. Often, that is damn hard to do.

I spend the afternoon doing yin yoga first, followed by a breathwork session.
*
*
Breathwork allows you to tap in to an altered state of consciousness. You connect to yourself on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Every breathwork experience is different. It depends on your body’s needs in a particular moment. You get what you can handle, so to say.
*
*
It was a confronting session, since it triggered some old wounds. You know, the kind of shit you thought you dealt with a long time ago.
*
*
I learned that cutting ties with situations, things or people that hurt or harm you is not enough. You also have to cut ties with the version of yourself that allowed it in to your life to start with.
*
*
How powerful the breath is. How wise the body. All the answers are within, you just have to be willing to listen. Listen, and then face your shit.
*
*
Facing your shit is not easy. It’s not pretty and it is definitely confronting and painful. But when you are willing to accept it for what it is ánd accept yourself for who you were, you will be able to let it go. Boom, vanished, like magic.
*

If it returns, repeat. Let it in, face it and let it go. As many times as needed.

I often get asked how I do it. How I manage to do a zillion things and not freak out. The boring answer is: I got to know myself and found balance.

To find my balance I needed to figure out what it is that I need. What does my body need? What does my heart need? What does my mind need? What does my spiritual body need? In other words, what’s my fuel?
*
*
So here is my list of things I need:
♾️ I need to move to feel happy, get those endorphins going: boxing & yoga are my go-to.
♾️ I need solitude and to be alone to get to know myself even better.
♾️ I set boundaries to delete bullshit and to only have genuine connections with others. There is no space for fake.
♾️ I need stillness to feel grounded and to be in the moment. No distractions.
♾️ I need to rest to digest and reset. Sleeping, doing nothing, be like sloth.
♾️ I need freedom to not feel any restraints. Let me do my thing without limits.
♾️ I need discipline to built inner trust, so I learn to rely on myself, knowing that I can do whatever it takes.
♾️ I need my curiosity and creativity to be inspired. Writing, drawing, playing the piano and the ideas start flowing out of nowhere.

As for more basic affairs: I need coffee, hugs and orgasms on a regular basis and in abundance ❤️

Wat is dat toch dat zoveel vrouwen vaak dingen maar accepteren “omdat ze nu eenmaal zo zijn”? Vooral niet moeilijk doen of je bek open trekken want, poeh, dan ben je misschien wel lastig, een bitch of too much. Nee joh, vind gewoon een manier om er mee om te gaan, om te accepteren.

Carrière maken én leuke moeder zijn? Ja, dat hoort zo in deze tijd. En die loonkloof? Tja, die blijven we accepteren. Naast de carrière misschien wel een gezin, een huishouden, jaartje ouder worden, maar ook zeker nog een lekker wijf blijven, toch? Ja, hoort ook bij de verwachtingen. Ik kan eindeloos doorgaan over alles dat wij als vrouw accepteren, ieder dag opnieuw. Ook als het moeilijk is of pijn doet. We slikken een keer en gaan weer door zoals verwacht, zoals het was.

Ik doe dat dus niet meer. Vroeger wel. Ik voldeed perfect aan alle verwachtingen en accepteerde dat mijn leven was zoals het was. Het heeft me een dikke burn-out opgeleverd. En achteraf leverde die burn-out mijn mooiste geschenk: ik werd een nieuwe ik. Een ik die ik zelf bedacht had, een ik die ik zelf leuk vond, een ik waar ik zelf gelukkig van werd. Een ik die helemaal niet zomaar alles accepteerde omdat het nu eenmaal zo was.

Ik heb alles bevraagd en betwijfeld wat deel van mij en van mijn leven was en ben er in alle opzichten beter van geworden. Ik heb namelijk leren loslaten wat mij niet dient in plaats van accepteren. Net als een slang, want die vervelt of sterft.

En jij? Wat kies jij? Blijf je veilig schuilen in je eigen huisje? De huidige versie van jezelf, onveranderlijk, terwijl je langzaam stikt in de sleur van je dagelijks leven? Iedere dag een beetje sterven omdat "de dingen zijn zoals ze zijn" en "het er nou eenmaal bij hoort"?
Of ben je bereid om los te laten en jezelf naar een hoger niveau te tillen? Een nieuwe versie van jezelf, ver voorbij je wildste dromen?

I thought I’d never manage. I sincerely fear the cold. I had to conquer myself, my beliefs, my thoughts, my convictions. And I did.

Adem!

Sinds ik met yoga bezig ben, ben ik gefascineerd, of eigenlijk geobsedeerd, door de adem en het ademhalen. Hét verschil tussen een uurtje rekken en strekken en het beoefenen van yoga op je matje zit in de ademhaling; de beheersing & de controle ervan.
*
Je adem is magisch. Je ademhaling is het enige systeem in je lichaam dat zowel automatisch (onbewust) werkt en tegelijkertijd bewust beïnvloedbaar is. Je hoeft er nooit bij na te denken maar je kunt het ritme in je eigen voordeel bewust beïnvloeden en aanpassen.

Voel je je kut? Ben je boos? Adem diep in, en zucht het uit.
Heb je stress? Adem langzaam en gecontroleerd in, en langzaam en gecontroleerd uit.
Ben je aan het sporten? Adem in twee teugen in en blaas je adem lang en langzaam uit.
Heb je seks en wil je nét even wat langer genieten? Adem diep in en uit door je mond, verbonden, zonder pauzes en liefst in hetzelfde ritme als je lover…zo lang het duurt 😜.
Écht, het wérkt. Probeer het zelf maar.

Ademwerk gaat een stukje verder dan de ademhalingsoefeningen tijdens yoga. Het heet niet voor niets ademWERK. De techniek van verbonden ademhalen brengt diepe ontspanning. Via je adem maak je contact met je onderbewustzijn en laat je stress, spanning en onverwerkte emoties los. De reacties die je ervaart tijdens een ademsessie kunnen fysiek, emotioneel en zelfs spiritueel zijn. Het is een intense en unieke ervaring die met niets te vergelijken is.

Sinds een aantal maanden volg ik een opleiding tot Breathwork Facilitator|Ademcoach bij @innercamp . Hun devies: eerst zelf doen en ervaren, dan overdragen en faciliteren. De afgelopen maanden heb ik dus heel wat afgeademd en is er veel losgekomen en opgeruimd. Voor mij is ademwerk een absolute gamechanger en ik kan niet wachten om dit met je te delen.

I have been feeling overwhelmed quite a bit lately. Overwhelmed by daily life duties. Overwhelmed by emotions, both positive and negative. Overwhelmed by thoughts, also positive and negative. Overwhelmed by my own drive to do a zillion things at once.

When I am overwhelmed, I need to shift my attention. Get away from whatever the f%&ck I am doing and shift my attention inwards. How do I feel? How does my body feel? How am I breathing? What do I need?
*
*
Sometimes I need a calming breathing exercise. Sometimes I need to sit and meditate. Sometimes I need to submerge myself into a hardcore breathwork session (omg, the magic of breathwork 🪄💫). Sometimes I need to move my body, do yoga, go boxing, go for a walk or have sex (did I just write that? Yes, indeed..gotta keep you focused 😉)

But sometimes all I need is a real challenge. Something that seems impossible to do. Something that scares me a bit. Something that requires my entire being to focus on one task and one task only. Something that requires my body, mind, heart and breath to be fully united.
*
*
I love challenges. The bigger the better. The more impossible they seem, the bigger my drive to give it a try. Challenge creates change. If I don’t challenge myself, I will never know what I am capable of or where my limits are, if any. Remember, we don’t grow when things are easy; we grow when we face challenges.

Last week I found myself in a situation that caught me off guard. Someone close to me said something, decided something that felt like a bolt from the blue. It was unexpected, hurtful also, uncomfortable to say the least. Instead of acting I could only react, which made it even worse.

I felt offended and angry. I felt I had to defend and stand up for myself. I felt I had to explain myself and convince the other person of my talents and my worth. I felt I had to prove how wrong this other person was. In other words, I went into some kind of ego protection mode. But I snapped out of it really quickly, like magic. So what happened?

First, I took a moment to face all the feelings that were triggered by what was said. Nasty 15 minutes I can tell you 😅. Second, I realised that whatever someone says is a reflection of them and that there was really no need to explain, defend or sell myself. Finally, but most importantly, I thought about the core of the message. Then something shifted.

I realised from the heart that this person was right. I realised from the heart that it was the right thing to do, the right decision to take. I realised from the heart that I felt the exact same way but just didn’t have the courage to speak up, afraid of disappointing or hurting the other person. I realised from the heart that I had neglected to listen to my inner voice, my gut, my intuition. Because whatever this person said to me, she and I already knew. Someone just had to be the first to say it out loud.

Ever since this talk I feel freed, I feel lighter. I know I am on the right track, pursuing my dreams. And yes, I’ve solemnly sworn to myself never to ignore my gut feeling again. Especially not when it requires me to be less me.

Ik ben al mijn hele leven sterk. Van jongs af aan heb ik geleerd dat ik sterk moet zijn om iets te bereiken of iets te doorstaan. Als je sterk bent, zowel fysiek, mentaal als emotioneel dan is namelijk niets onmogelijk. En dat klopt.

Mentaal sterk zijn geeft je de kracht en het vertrouwen om iets nieuws te beginnen, een nieuwe koers te varen. Fysiek sterk zijn helpt je gezondheid, helpt om door te gaan, vol te houden. Emotioneel sterk zijn helpt op de momenten dat je het even niet meer ziet zitten, je je hulpeloos of zwak voelt.

We leven in een wereld waarin sterk zijn gestimuleerd wordt. Sterk zijn is krachtig. Sterk zijn is positief. De nadruk ligt op sterk. En zachtheid wordt vaak gezien als zwak en negatief.

Als ik sterk ben, houd ik me staande. Dat vind ik comfortabel, dat gaat me gemakkelijk af. Maar eigenlijk ben ik op mijn sterkst als ik zwak ben, als ik zacht ben, als ik breek. Dat vind ik dood en doodeng, pure angst, want dan moet ik me kwetsbaar opstellen en niet op mijn hoede zijn. Dan moet ik dat stukje van mezelf laten zien, dat ik gewoonlijk verberg door sterk te zijn.

Maar wanneer ik dat laat zien, wanneer ik zwak en zacht durf te zijn, dan gebeuren de echte wonderen. Dan verschuif ik hemel en aarde, in mezelf en om me heen. Dan komt er iets in mij los dat krachtiger is dan al mijn sterkte bij elkaar. Want achter de angst liggen alle cadeautjes.
