I CALL BULLSHIT

“Some people are beautifully wrapped boxes of bullshit”. I don’t know who said it, but I laughed out loud when I read it. It is so true. I bet you immediately think of someone in your circle this applies to.

I take no bullshit from myself. I know very well when I am procrastinating or postponing something, or hiding from something. No matter how or why I end up in a certain situation, I am responsible for my own (non) actions and accountable for what happens as a result of them. Taking responsibility for my life doesn’t mean I am responsible for all that happened or happens to me because no matter how hard I try, I can’t control life. I can only control my reaction to it.

I see it as my responsibility to put the work in because you cannot expect results from the work you didn’t do. It’s easy to talk the talk, but without action it is absolutely worthless. You can express your needs all you want and put it “out there”, but it is worthless if you do not adjust the you that goes with that need or change. And that includes letting go of the version of you that has allowed it to happen or to persist.

Cut the bullshit from your life.
It’s simple but not easy.
You are the solution to your own problem.
You are in the way of you.
Take responsibility and hold yourself accountable.
Make your life a bullshit free zone.

MAMA AYAHUASCA

Back in March I went to Spain on a private ayahuasca retreat with Marjolein @blissfinderz . For years “doing ayahuasca” had been on my list, but it was never the right moment. Until it was. They say “Mama Ayahuasca calls you” and that was very true for me.

It is hard to put down in words what I experienced. I could write an entire book about my journey, but insta only allows 2200 characters. The words that come to mind when thinking back are: gratitude, humbleness, trust and joy.

I had lots of questions like Who am I? What’s my essence? What’s my souls’ purpose?
I had been going through some though times and craved peace within, self-acceptance and self-love.
I struggled with feelings of fear, shame and guilt over things I had only shared with myself and maybe two or three other people.

Mama Ayahuasca took me on a journey through my past, present and future.
♾️ She taught me about patience: do not try to steer, control or fix every situation but trust the process and let it unfold. Sounds simple but it’s the hardest thing for me in life.
♾️ She taught me about my guilt and shame: do not make yourself responsible for the actions, reactions or opinions of others. Let that be part of their journey, not yours.
♾️ She taught me how empathy comes from trauma response (you make their pain yours) and that compassion means something completely different (you hold space for their pain).
♾️ She showed me my essence and what I am capable of: I am limitless and worthy of all.
♾️ She made me feel love, the unconditional kind, that can only be found within.
♾️ She even joked around with me using her humour as my mirror.

And for those that want to know what other amazing things I experienced: I died, I was reborn, I had a conversation with God, I cleared ancestral trauma and received a new power animal, Snake, which symbolizes transformation and healing. I laughed, cried and raged. Felt deep sadness, grief and anger. But also so much love, joy and happiness.

After my journey I started taking more ownership of my life. Step by step, no rush. I still have some miles to walk though.

I feel deep respect for the plant, the medicine. Forever grateful.

EXPRESS YOURSELF

Throughout my life, I have been confronted more than once with the inability to express myself. Either by suppressing my emotions or by not being able to speak up.

As children we learn to suppress our emotions. I think we all recognize phrases like: “it’s not a big deal”, “don’t be like that”, “don’t be so upset”, “just forget about it”. This suppression is, often unintentionally, taught to us by our caretakers because of their own unresolved emotional traumas. As a parent myself, I have said similar things to my girls, neglecting or dismissing their emotions.

Now, as an adult and as a parent, I see it as my responsibility to free myself from my emotional chains. Through my own experience and trainings I’ve learned that the key to releasing suppressed emotions in a healthy and powerful way is HOLOSOMATIC BREATHWORK.

Breathwork is an amazing tool that allows the release of emotions through various expressions like crying, laughing, yelling, moaning and more. Other ways to express suppressed emotions during breathwork are hitting or stamping the floor, shaking, sweating, or shivering.

Using your voice can unleash the emotions that you have been suppressing for so long. For some, myself included, it can be very triggering, especially if your voice has been silenced or shamed in the past. Physical movement to express is the cherry on the cake.

The release doesn’t always come with a known emotion or story attached and that is perfectly normal. Your body itself knows what it needs to express and release. You don’t always need to understand or know why. But believe me, breathwork is always therapeutic.

WHAT DOES A BREATHWORK SESSION LOOK LIKE?

At the start of each session the setup of the session and the breathing technique used are explained. More thorough explanation is given on the variety of sensations that you may feel or experience on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. After this, each individual lays down on their mat, putting their eye mask on and getting comfortable.

In the first phase you’ll be breathing slow breaths and calm music will play. You get used to the breathing technique and the first physical sensations may arise. Some may feel uncomfortable at first. The most common sensations are: dry mouth, tingling or numbness in your fingers/toes or anywhere in your body, slight dizziness, tetany and change of body temperature (hot/cold).

In the second phase the breath transitions into a faster and more intense pace and the music becomes more rhythmic and upbeat. The first physical sensations will most probably have settled. You go deeper into an altered state of consciousness. All sorts of emotions may surface and you may feel the need to cry, laugh, make sound or move. This may also be a very visual or spiritual part of your session.

In the third phase you will be guided to a peak in your session. The music becomes intense and dramatic. Deep emotional release is encouraged through crying, laughing, yelling, hitting or stamping the floor and shaking of the body.

In the fourth phase you’ll come back down to calming breaths and calm music. This is a phase of deep relaxation as well as deep feeling and insights into yourself.

Breathwork is a highly personal experience. It can feel very transformational. People often experience personal epiphanies and breakthroughs. It’s described as a game-changer by many.

I’d even say: you risk everything. If you want to advance in life, if you’re in need of change, you have to take risks. Do something different. Stick out your neck.

You can’t repeat the same thing and expect a different outcome. Taking risks simply means trying new ways of doing things.

Your entire evolution is constant risk-taking. Sometimes it works and you advance. Sometimes it doesn’t work and you fail. Not taking a risk at all, not only makes you lose the opportunity for failure but takes away any chance of success or change. And you will feel stuck in life.

So when you find yourself stagnant, head in the sand, feet in the mud, do something different, take a risk and watch how things start to move again in alignment with your wants and needs.

Have that difficult talk, ask the risky question, do the thing you’ve always wanted but told yourself you couldn’t or shouldn’t. Yes, you may fail. Yes, you may get rejected. But not even trying will make you fail by definition.

Time for some truth bombs. Over the past few weeks, I have never felt more confident, yet also so insecure about myself. Bouncing back and forth between “I am a f-ing goddess” and “I’m not good enough, I cannot do this”. Then I came across this text (source unknown) called “Own your stuff”. So let me share.

I am not intimidating, you are intimidated. There is a difference.
I don’t take up too much space; you’re just used to people playing small.
My inner light is not too bright; you are used to dimming your own.
I am not mean nor aggressive, I am honest and assertive and that makes you uncomfortable.
I do not make you uncomfortable. My presence challenges your comfort.
All of this is yours. I will not be less for you to feel better about yourself.

It hit me like a rock and here’s why. Ever since I started my breathwork and tantra journey (and adding some shamanic mentoring to it), I’ve changed. I have become more expressive and outspoken. More “out there” and visible. More direct and opinionated. Fiercely driven in my quest for self-consciousness and self-awareness. I have become more liberated and free in my sexuality, not afraid to use it to my benefit to get what I want. More protective of myself, my time and energy. I have become the most vulnerable yet most powerful version of me so far. And the end is nowhere near.

But this change has also triggered those around me, even people close to me. “Do you really need to post that picture?”, “is that comment necessary?”, “don’t you think this story is a bit too much or too provocative?”. And when people around me say these things, I crawl back into my shell and my self-doubt and shame kick in. Two “old friends” that I can gladly go without in life and so can you ❤️.

DO NOT SETTLE. Do not doubt, do not play small. Own your stuff. Follow your heart’s desire, regardless of what everyone else thinks. Fuck that. No concessions. Do you. Love you. Take care of you. You first. Me first. Not selfish, pure self-love. Take that in, suck it up and let it simmer. You’re welcome 🙌🔥.

I love women. Yes, ik hou van vrouwen.

Eeuwenlang zijn vrouwen, vrouwenlichamen, onderworpen aan de macht van de patriarch en religieuze schaamte. Als je als vrouw niet voldeed aan de verwachtingen vanuit de heerschappij werd je bespot, verbannen, verwond of zelfs vermoord. Dit heeft de vrouwelijkheid en het vrouw zijn diep beschadigd. Tot op de dag vandaag kunnen vrouwen niet volledig vrouw zijn.

Het is zo makkelijk om naar een andere vrouw te kijken en te oordelen. Je ziet haar, anders dan jij, en maakt haar af, klein, haalt haar neer. Zij is té, too much, te weinig, meer of minder. Levendiger, luider, aanweziger, sexier. Saaier, duffer, muffer. Dikker, dunner. Jonger, ouder. En dan oordeel je. Je veroordeelt haar. En met dat oordeel, veroordeel je jezelf. Wtf ladies?!

Waarom doen we dat? Vergelijken? Oordelen? Waarom voelen we ons inferieur of superieur ten opzichte van andere vrouwen? Stop.

Sisterhood, daar gaat het om. De definitie van sisterhood is een sociaal, ethisch en emotioneel pact tussen vrouwen. Gebaseerd op het inzicht dat we samen sterker zijn dan alleen. Die kracht, die zelfbeschikking is alleen mogelijk als we samen komen en elkaar zien als sisters, niet als rivalen. Het is een pact, een relatie gebaseerd op onze waarde als collectief, vastberaden om de wereld te veranderen.

Sometimes you have to go through the same thing over and over again in order to learn the lesson, heal from it and let go. Often, that is damn hard to do.

I spend the afternoon doing yin yoga first, followed by a breathwork session.
*
*
Breathwork allows you to tap in to an altered state of consciousness. You connect to yourself on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Every breathwork experience is different. It depends on your body’s needs in a particular moment. You get what you can handle, so to say.

It was a confronting session, since it triggered some old wounds. You know, the kind of shit you thought you dealt with a long time ago.

I learned that cutting ties with situations, things or people that hurt or harm you is not enough. You also have to cut ties with the version of yourself that allowed it in to your life to start with.

How powerful the breath is. How wise the body. All the answers are within, you just have to be willing to listen. Listen, and then face your shit.

Facing your shit is not easy. It’s not pretty and it is definitely confronting and painful. But when you are willing to accept it for what it is ánd accept yourself for who you were, you will be able to let it go. Boom, vanished, like magic.

If it returns, repeat. Let it in, face it and let it go. As many times as needed.
